Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa (Points-tested)


This visa is for Points-tested skilled migrant workers who are not relying on sponsorship by an employer or family member or a nomination by a State or territory government. It is a pathway to permanent residency in Australia. To be eligible for this visa, you have to submit an expression of interest (EOI).

  • you require an occupation listed on the 189 occupation list 
  • obtain a suitable skills assessment for the above occupation 
  • lodge an EOI 
  • meet the points test mark of __ points (as of  ___ 2020) 
  • be between 18 and 44 years of age 
  • have competent English
  • receive an invitation to apply
  • fulfil health and character requirements


You may be onshore or offshore when this application is made. Similarly, you may be onshore or offshore at the time of the Department’s decision. 

The visa is unique in that it allows you unlimited working and study rights, therefore you will have few restrictions living in Australia. 

The visa enables you to bring your partner and/or your immediate family to Australia by attaching them to the initial application or as subsequent entrants. There are multiple travel facilities for this visa, meaning that you can enter and exit Australia without restriction for the 5 years after obtaining this visa.
